brownfield redevelopment

an underused parking lot. my assignment asks for a redevelopment proposal for this site. my group member suggested to have a community center but i was thinking of having a mini entertainment center instead initially. but i realized it's kinda ridiculous. so i did some more research and after asking for some of my friends' opinions i think that a research center would be a good one. the site is very near to the university and it's situated exactly next to a housing area with a football field and a huge grocery store on the other side.

the community center, my groupmate argued, would benefit the neighbourhood as it would provide services such as gym, sports courts, party rooms, conference room, kids day care and what not with affordable charges. in terms of the economic contribution, they said that the employment created and the revenue made from the services provided would help increase the GDP, the same goes for government spending which would increase in order to provide funds to the center.

but i, on the other hand, prefer to have a research center instead. a research center would be a valuable asset for the city both in the short and long run. aside from the creation of significant number of tertiary employments, it would also encourage the movement of professionals from big cities like toronto. indirectly, the spending in hamilton would increase as the workers would tend to rent local houses and spend their money in hamilton. in the long run, the researches made at the center would contribute to scientific and social improvements and also the government would probably offer funds in order to conduct the researches.

i also found about science park or technology park which integrates researches and businesses through the collaboration between educational movements and business institutions. science park also provide assistance and supports to businesses to invest in innovation or product enhancement. so i think science park would definitely contribute to the development of economy and the society.

brownfield: parking lot

but those two insist on having the community center. which makes me wonder, how capitalist i am at heart. hahaha. okay maybe i am not doing justice to the term that i used. but something like that. not really leaning towards socialism. like money is considered as one of the priorities. what do you guys think? which one would likely be the best solution?

thanks in advance for your response(s) :D

oh, sorry tak comment on this dalam email tuh.
erm, babe i agree dgn ur group mates lah, cause the site is a bit too small for a research centre. the one at UWO besar kot, that's why i think tak sesuai. and judging from this photo, it is not "that" close to the university kan, but there are houses all around so a community centre is a better option.

well, everybody is entitled to his/her opinion right...?

I prefer your group-mates' idea. However, science park is a very interesting idea. I am thinking of Green Building. It would be so cool to have one in Hamilton. Go green!

I am a stalker but on this I have to give you my cents.

I disagree with your groupmates. That area looks like a very affluent neighbourhood. A community center would benefit a neighbourhood with a lower income rate. The science park/ research center/intellectualplacewhereyoucanchargepeople is an excellent idea. People with money are always looking for ways to enrich themselves and are willing to pay a fee for it. So go for it.

And community centers DO NOT contribute to GDP growth. Community centers are not out to make money anyway. That's why it's called a COMMUNITY center. Anyway. Don't give in to your groupmates! And it's not a capitalist. It's called forward thinking.

xD okay, I was never here.

thank you all for your responses. i ended up writing a proposal to build a community centre instead cause I thought since they were so confident that a community would be more beneficial, I was hoping that they would be able to write up some good points for their parts of the essay. Turned out that they didn't know a shit, couldn't really explain some of the points that they argued with me. imagine having different sentences with the same meaning in each paragraph. just a statement with no proof and restating the 'main point'. so yea it was a bad week. i was so stressed out rewriting their crappy parts. sigh. yea everyone has his/her own opinion, there are really no right/wrong answers, as long as you can make justifications. and i still like my idea. and farah, we're really on the same page on this. I'm loving your view on this matter, thanks for sharing your two cents :D and paris and kok leong, your views are great too, just that my personal view does not really coincide with yours hahah thank you so much for sharing your thoughts as well :)

Yay I'm right! *ego masturbates* xD
Here, have another three cents to make a five. xD

Seriously tho, if you secretly pursued your idea, you'd find that you have a lot of points to justify it. stuff it in their face and make them challenge your idea. Only pursue the project with the winning idea. But since you're already doing it anyway, just for future reference? xD Anyway. I hate`crappy members too.

Ta'ra.
